Karen Barnes

Dr. Barnes was appointed President in July 2011, following four years as Vice-President Academic.

Dr. Barnes’ focus is ensuring the College effectively meets the education and training needs of Yukon through engaging in strategic consultation with the public, industry, government, students and staff. Since joining the College, her outreach to Yukon’s mining industries has led to stronger partnerships and the creation of several new programs tailored to provide students with key skills in these industries. It has also lead to the creation of the Centre for Northern Innovation in Mining, in partnership with the Yukon’s mining industry.

As a champion for Indigenous self-determination, Dr. Barnes has championed the institution’s relationship with First Nations, leading to the College receiving the gold Indigenous Education Excellence award in 2015 from Colleges and Institutes Canada.

Since 2011 Dr. Barnes has led the College’s transition to university, at the request of the Government of Yukon. The College is well on its way to becoming Yukon University.
