VIU, Camosun partner to deliver career pathways trade program for Indigenous peoples

Vancouver Island University and Camosun College have partnered to deliver a new career pathways trades program for Indigenous peoples. Yukon College and Vancouver Island University to increase enrollment and completion rates of Indigenous learners

NANAIMO, B.C. In the spirit of reconciliation, a new learning partnership for Indigenous youth at Vancouver Island University (VIU) and Yukon College is being announced today. Fulbright Canada, one of the most prestigious scholarship programs in the world, has chosen Vancouver Island University (VIU) to be the home of their newest research Chair, the Visiting Research Chair in Aboriginal Studies. Fulbright Canada chose VIU because of the leadership role the University has taken in building relationships with First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities and supporting Aboriginal education. During the past six years, Arthur Vickers has created a suite of two chairs and a box to be used in convocation ceremonies at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo

This project was commissioned by Coast Capital Savings. Last month, the suite was officially presented, with Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon in attendance, and at that time Vickers was made an honorary doctor of letters. The artist recently spoke with Robert Amos at his gallery in Cowichan Bay. Arthur Vickers has created many high-profile art works, including the desk for the premier’s office and Intangible Heritage, an image in 23-carat gold that is on show at the Royal B.C. Museum. RBC and JIBC build first-responder capacity in rural and Aboriginal communities

Support from RBC has helped build much-needed first-responder capacity in rural and Aboriginal communities in B.C. “In many rural, remote and access-challenged communities across B.C., there is a demonstrated need for additional first responders who can provide much-needed emergency medical assistance to those who may have extended ambulance response and transport times to hospitals and clinics,” said Jodie Marshall, JIBC Health Sciences Division Program Manager.  Read more….

VIU LAUNCHES TUITION WAIVER PROGRAM TO SUPPORT YOUTH IN CARE
