Kwantlen horticulture student wins industry award for outstanding achievement

November 12, 2010

(METRO VANCOUVER, B.C.) There’s a good reason that the Adam Graham’s grass is looking a little greener these days. As a recent graduate of Kwantlen’s Turf Management Diploma program, Graham has just been named as the winner of the 2010 Canadian Golf Superintendent’s Association–Toro “Future Superintendent Award.”

The award is given in recognition of the recipient’s passion and dedication to the industry and their academic achievement.

“Adam is a personification of the old adage, ‘if you need something done, give it to a busy person,’” says School of Horticulture instructor Stan Kazymerchyk. “Adam is always the first person to jump in to help out, despite having a full schedule with work, studies and family,” says Kazymerchyk. “He was a great president of the student’s turfgrass club,” adds Kazymerchyk, “taking our fundraising efforts and industry respect to new levels. He also gave back to the community, volunteering for three home makeovers for needy families.”

As the winner of this year’s award, Graham will travel to Scotland and take part in a six-week training and work experience program. He’ll also travel to Minneapolis to tour Toro’s headquarters and attend the Canadian International Turfgrass Conference and Trade Show in Vancouver in March as a guest of the Canadian Golf Superintendent’s Association. Toro will also award a personal computer to Kwantlen’s School of horticulture in recognition of Graham’s achievement.

“We’re all very proud of Adam’s achievements,” adds David Davidson, associate dean of Kwantlen’s School of Horticulture. “He’s a great representative of the high quality of students that are graduating from our programs. Adam and his instructors truly deserve all the recognition they’re receiving with this award.”

Graham, currently working as an irrigation technician/foreman at Predator Ridge Golf Course in Vernon, graduated from Kwantlen in 2010. He was also selected for the 2009 & 2010 Western Canada Turfgrass Association Scholarship Award, and the 2010 School of Horticulture Award in recognition of his outstanding achievements.

Kwantlen’s School of Horticulture provides students with career opportunities through our programs in turf management, landscape design and installation, and greenhouse and nursery production.
